Various topics were discussed during the meeting of the President of Kazakhstan Gasim-Jomart Tokayev with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in Paris. France wants to start importing uranium from Kazakhstan. This topic was also discussed during the French President's visit to Kazakhstan last year. The point is that France's relations with some of the states in Africa have become strained. As a result, France cannot import the uranium it needs from these countries. France needs uranium to keep its numerous nuclear power plants running without interruption. Nuclear power plants account for 63 percent of France's energy use. Kazakhstan ranks first in the world in terms of uranium production. For this reason, Paris's attention is focused on Kazakhstan.
Axar.az reports that these words were included in the analysis of the "Atlas" Research Center.
It was reported that the French EDF company wants to participate in the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan:
"Astana considers it possible for the French company to participate in the construction. However, Gasim-Jomart Tokayev's position is that companies from several countries should participate in the construction of the nuclear power plant. This is also consistent with Astana's policy of balance. For example, the Russian company "Rosatom" also wants to participate in the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan. China also does not want to be left out of this process. In 2023, the supply of uranium from Kazakhstan to China and Russia reached a record volume. During the first 10 months of 2023, the proceeds from the export of processed uranium in Kazakhstan amounted to 2.46 billion dollars. This is three times more than in 2022. Russia and China are trying to increase the import of uranium from Kazakhstan. In such a case, France's desire to buy uranium from Kazakhstan will be met with concern in Moscow and Beijing. On the other hand, the joint participation of a French company with a Russian or Chinese company in the construction of a nuclear power plant seems impossible.
Gasim-Jomart Tokayev's article was published in the French magazine "Le Figaro" before the meeting with Macron. In that article, Tokayev called the relations between the two countries "strategic". In the article, Tokayev emphasized the importance of the Middle Corridor project, calling it a trade and energy bridge between Asia and Europe.
Tokayev considers it possible to import uranium to France. At the same time, it is no coincidence that the President of Kazakhstan commented on the importance of the Middle Corridor in the article. Because if Kazakhstan decides to sell uranium to France, it can be delivered to the European country through the Middle Corridor. That is, Kazakh uranium should be delivered to France via Azerbaijan, which is part of the Middle Corridor. In order for this to happen, France must correct Azerbaijan's policy."
