Azerbaijan VP visits Europe’s largest pediatric hospital

First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mehriban Aliyeva, visited the largest pediatric hospital in Europe, Bambino Gesu, on October 16.

Axar.az reports that the First Vice-President got acquainted with the molecular genetics and clinical diagnostics laboratories here.

President of the Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital, Tiziano Onesti, provided First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva with information about the laboratories.

It was noted that the Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital, founded in 1869 by the Salviati family and located in Rome, which is considered an extraterritorial area of the Holy See, was initially established as a private hospital. This medical institution is among the first structures designed for the treatment of children.

It was noted that, despite being an institution financed by the Italian state and operating as a state hospital, the Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital is an institution of the Holy See and reports directly to it and is subject to its management. In 2006, the hospital was accredited as an academic hospital by the Joint Commission International and is currently the largest children's hospital and research center in Europe.

It was noted that the San Paolo branch is the center of the hospital's large research laboratories equipped with the latest technologies for genetic and cellular research, as well as a pharmaceutical workshop where advanced treatment methods are applied. Here, the results of clinical diagnoses are compared with genetic analyses for further confirmation, and an individual medical approach is applied to patients thanks to metabolic analyses.

On September 10 of this year, a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation was signed between the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and the Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital of the Holy See.

The cooperation established with the Bambino Gesu Hospital will make a significant contribution to the development of rare diseases, molecular genetics, clinical diagnostics, and other relevant fields in Azerbaijan. This partnership will provide Azerbaijani scientists and researchers with the opportunity to master advanced scientific approaches and conduct research in laboratories equipped with modern technologies. As a result, our country will develop a human resource potential capable of conducting independent scientific research in these areas, and conditions will be created for the establishment of new laboratories that meet international standards. Also, within the framework of cooperation, it is planned to participate in training and exchange programs for our healthcare professionals.
