Azerbaijan marks Aghdaban massacre anniversary

Today marks the anniversary of the Aghdaban massacre.

Axar.az informs that 34 years have passed since Armenian armed groups carried out the massacre on the village of Aghdaban in Azerbaijan’s Kalbajar district on the night of April 7–8, 1992.

The village, which consisted of 130 homes, was completely burned down and effectively wiped out.

A total of 779 civilians were subjected to torture, while 32 people were killed. Among them were eight elderly residents aged 90–100, two young children, and seven women who were burned alive.

Manuscripts belonging to poet Aghdabanli Gurban and prominent ashig Dede Shamshir were also destroyed.

Heydar Aliyev, who was the first to give a political and legal assessment of the tragedy, described the events as one of the gravest crimes against humanity and a shame for all humankind.
