Following extensive work with the German side, new rules on the recognition of official documents have come into force, significantly easing procedures for Azerbaijani citizens, Nasimi Aghayev, Azerbaijan's Ambassador to Germany.
Axar.az informs, citing Repоrt, that Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Germany announced this on his X account.
The ambassador stated that the legalization of documents by embassies between Germany and Azerbaijan has now been completely halted. Instead, the apostille procedure has been introduced.
"What does this mean? Both countries are parties to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention. According to this Convention, for official documents issued in one country to be recognized in the other, only an apostille stamp is required. No additional legalization or certification is needed. As a result of work with the German side, in March 2026, the Apostille Convention fully entered into force between the two states. Thus, official documents issued in Germany are validated solely with an apostille stamp from the relevant German authorities, and this is sufficient for recognition in Azerbaijan. There is no longer any need for additional legalization at the Azerbaijani Embassy in Berlin," he said.
Aghayev also emphasized that documents issued in Azerbaijan are recognized in Germany with only an apostille stamp, without requiring additional legalization at the German Embassy in Baku: "This important development clearly demonstrates that effective cooperation based on mutual trust between Azerbaijan and Germany continues to steadily advance in the interests of our peoples."
