Today marks the day of Fuzuli city, commemorating four years since the city was liberated from occupation.

Axar.az reports that on this day, alongside Fuzuli city, seven other residential areas in the region—Qochehmedli, Chimen, Juvarli, Pirehmedli, Musabeyli, Ishıqlı, and Dedeli villages—were also cleared from occupiers.

The Fuzuli operation was one of the most significant battles of the Azerbaijan Army during the Second Karabakh War on the southeast front.

The enemy suffered considerable losses in personnel and equipment and fled the area.

Additionally, the breaching of several defense lines located along the former contact line in Fuzuli has created vast opportunities for the Azerbaijan Army to advance along the southern front.

It should be noted that Fuzuli, one of Azerbaijan's large settlements, was founded in 1827. The settlement known as Qaryagin was established in 1930 and organized into Fuzuli district, originally named Qarabulaq. The district center was the town of Qaryagin and encompassed the villages along the banks of Qozluchay, Kondelenchay, Araz, and both sides of the Fuzuli-Agdam highway. In 1959, the district was renamed Fuzuli District in honor of the 400th anniversary of the great Azerbaijani poet Muhammad Fuzuli. The area of the district is 1,386 square kilometers and includes one city and 78 villages.

On August 23, 1993, as a result of an attack by the Armenian Armed Forces, Füzuli city and 58 villages were occupied.

Fuzuli district is rich in historical and religious monuments, particularly mausoleums. Alongside other settlements, Fuzuli district suffered from vandalism during the Armenian occupation. The houses and historical monuments in the area were completely destroyed, and trees were devastated.

According to a decree signed by President Ilham Aliyev on July 31, 2023, Fuzuli City Day is celebrated annually on October 17.
