Azerbaijan celebrates Restoration of Independence

Today marks the Day of Restoration of Independence in Azerbaijan.

Axar.az reports that On October 18, 1991, the Supreme Soviet adopted the Constitutional Act on the "State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan." This act references the Declaration of Independence from May 28, 1918, and the Restoration of State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan from August 30, 1991, affirms that Azerbaijan is the successor to the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.

This year, October 18 marks the 32nd anniversary of the restoration of Azerbaijan's independence.

The Azerbaijani people established an independent republic in the early 20th century and restored their independence in 1991 as the successor to the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.

Since 1991, this year marks the third time the Azerbaijani people celebrate this holiday as a victorious nation that has restored its territorial integrity.

In May 1992, the National Assembly approved the National Anthem of Azerbaijan (music by Uzeyir Hajibeyov, lyrics by Ahmad Javad), followed shortly by the tricolor flag and the national emblem featuring an eight-pointed star with flames.

On October 15, 2021, the Azerbaijani Parliament held a plenary session and passed a new law on "Independence Day." On the same day, President Ilham Aliyev ratified the law.

With the approval of this law, October 18 was renamed from Independence Day to the Day of Restoration of Independence.

This year, the Day of Restoration of Independence in Azerbaijan is being celebrated in a completely different atmosphere. On September 19, 2023, local anti-terror operations were initiated in the region to ensure the implementation of the provisions of a trilateral statement, prevent large-scale provocations in the Karabakh economic region, disarm and remove Armenian armed forces from our territories, neutralize their military infrastructure, and ensure the safety of the returning civilian population as well as civil workers and military personnel involved in reconstruction efforts. This was also aimed at restoring the constitutional order of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

During the operations lasting just over 23 hours, the positions of the Armenian armed forces on the front lines and in-depth areas, as well as long-term firing points, military vehicles, and facilities, were incapacitated using precision weaponry. The enemy raised a white flag and surrendered. This restored the constitutional order across all territories of Azerbaijan. Currently, the tricolor flag of Azerbaijan waves proudly at every point in Karabakh.

It should be noted that the Day of Restoration of Independence is celebrated annually as a holiday in Azerbaijan.
