Messi breaks World Cup scoring record with 17th goal

Lionel Messi has become the all-time leading scorer in men’s World Cup history after scoring for Argentina against Austria in their Group J match.

Axar.az reports, citing The Guardian, the Argentine forward surpassed Germany’s Miroslav Klose, whose record of 16 World Cup goals had stood since 2014, by finishing a flowing team move in the first half in Dallas.

The goal marked Messi’s sixth consecutive World Cup match with a goal and came just two days before his 39th birthday. The Argentina captain is playing in his sixth World Cup and made history with his record 28th appearance in the tournament.

Klose scored 16 goals across four World Cups for Germany, while Brazil’s Ronaldo ranks third on the all-time list with 15 goals. Germany’s Gerd Muller and France’s Kylian Mbappe are tied with 14 goals each.

Messi had earlier missed a chance to break the record from the penalty spot, but later secured his place at the top of the World Cup scoring charts.
