JD Vance urges skepticism toward Iranian social media

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has dismissed claims that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi intentionally snubbed him during weekend negotiations in Switzerland.

Axar.az reports citing CNN, that Vance rejected suggestions that Araghchi deliberately avoided greeting him after a video circulated on social media showing the Iranian diplomat entering and leaving a meeting room without a handshake.

“No,” Vance said when asked whether he felt snubbed by the Iranian negotiator.

Speaking to reporters before departing Switzerland, Vance said social media speculation about the talks did not reflect what was happening behind closed doors.

“Sometimes I find them extremely confusing as negotiators,” he said, referring to the Iranian side. He noted that despite a “social media firestorm” claiming the negotiations were collapsing, the two sides continued discussions for another nine hours.

Vance described Sunday as “a very, very good day” of negotiations and said the United States and Iran made “a lot of good progress” during the talks.

He also urged journalists to “mistrust a little bit what you see coming out of Iranian social media,” arguing that online narratives often fail to reflect the actual state of negotiations.
