Today marks 33 years since the Garadaghli tragedy.
Axar.az reports that the village, located 13 kilometers west of the Khojavend district center, near the Khojavend-Khankendi highway, was occupied by Armenian armed forces on February 17, 1992.
During the incident, 118 people were taken hostage, and 33 were shot dead. The Armenians threw the wounded into a farm well and covered it with soil.
In total, 68 of the captives and hostages were killed, while 50 were released. Among those taken hostage were 10 women and 2 schoolchildren. Of those who were freed, 18 later died from severe, incurable wounds, including 5 women.
As a result of the genocide committed in Garadaghli, four members of two different families were killed, 43 families lost their heads of household, and 146 children were orphaned. Among those murdered by Armenian armed forces were 10 women and 8 school-aged children.
In total, 91 people—one in every ten village residents—were killed. The village suffered massive destruction, with 200 houses, a cultural center, a secondary school, a hospital, and other facilities, as well as Azerbaijani historical, religious, and cultural monuments, including the cemetery, being demolished.
The entire village, once home to about 800 people, fell victim to Armenian brutality and cruelty.
After the local anti-terror measures carried out in Karabakh on September 19-20, 2023, Azerbaijan successfully restored its sovereignty over Garadaghli.
