Denmark boosts Arctic defenses amid Russia threat

Following repeated statements by U.S. President Donald Trump about his desire to annex Greenland, Denmark has taken concrete steps to protect the island — not from the U.S., but from Russia.

Axar.az reports, citing Bloomberg, that Danish intelligence services have acknowledged the high risks of escalation between NATO and Russia in the Arctic and have adjusted their rhetoric accordingly over the past year.

In October, the Danish government announced a second Arctic military package that includes investments in additional naval defense capabilities around Greenland, as well as maritime patrol aircraft for underwater monitoring and countermeasures, and more icebreakers.

Earlier, in September, Denmark conducted its largest-ever military exercise in Greenland. Unlike previous drills focused on rescue missions and civilian tasks, this one was aimed at preparing for war.
