At least 36 killed as Iran protests spread nationwide

At least 36 people have been killed during nearly ten days of protests across Iran, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA).

Axar.az reports that most of the victims were protesters, while Iranian authorities acknowledge only the deaths of several security personnel and have not released an official toll.

The unrest, driven by a deepening economic crisis, currency collapse, high inflation, and long-standing grievances over governance, has spread to most provinces.

Security forces have used tear gas and live fire to disperse demonstrations, including major clashes in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar and Iran’s western Ilam province.

Human rights groups accuse authorities of violent repression, including raids on hospitals treating wounded protesters. International concern has grown, with the UN calling for restraint and the US warning against the killing of peaceful demonstrators.

The protests are described as the most widespread since the 2022 Mahsa Amini uprising, raising fears of another large-scale crackdown.
