US to complete transfer of ISIS detainees from Syria to Iraq

The United States is set to complete the transfer of up to 7,000 Islamic State detainees from prisons in northeast Syria to Iraq within days, according to a US official cited by Reuters.

Axar.az reports that hundreds of detainees are expected to cross the border daily, with priority given to the most dangerous fighters.

The move follows growing security concerns after the collapse of Kurdish-led forces in northeast Syria and a recent escape of around 200 low-level IS fighters from a prison in Shaddadi. The detainees include multiple nationalities, with Iraqis forming the largest group, alongside Arab fighters and citizens from several European countries.

Washington says non-Iraqi detainees will be held temporarily in Iraq and has urged countries to repatriate their citizens.

The transfers come as Syria’s new government consolidates control over former Kurdish-held areas, while the US reassesses its military presence and role in Syria amid shifting regional dynamics.
