Giorgi Vashadze, leader of the opposition party “Strategy Agmashenebeli” in Georgia, has been released after spending the past seven months in prison.
Axar.az informs, citing Georgian media, after leaving the prison, he told journalists, “I want to greet Georgia. I am confident and I believe that we will definitely win because we want to live in a fair country; a country that moves forward, is among developed nations, is a full member of the European Union, and is represented internationally. I want to live in a country where a person is not arrested just because they hold a different opinion. Honestly, the past seven months were difficult, but my faith that we will succeed is so strong that not a single day felt wasted.”
Vashadz was found guilty of failing to comply with the request of the investigative commission of the “Georgian Dream” parliament. In addition to the seven-month prison sentence, he was barred from holding office for two years.
In addition, the Prosecutor’s Office claims that Vashadze publicly made calls for “revolution, the overthrow of the government, the collapse of the authorities, picketing of state buildings, and physical confrontation against law enforcement.”
