Kobakhidze: Alternative corridor poses no threat to Georgia

The announced alternative freight corridor does not threaten the country’s transit potential, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said.

Axar.az informs he recalled that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan stated at a meeting in Davos that in the future, part of the cargo currently transported through Georgia will be carried directly across the Azerbaijan–Armenia border.

“A simple indicator confirms that the alternative corridor poses no threat to Georgia: over the past five years, cargo volumes along the Middle Corridor have increased sevenfold. Under these conditions, our main task is to make maximum use of our own infrastructure and support the growing cargo turnover. The alternative route will only complement our transit role,” Kobakhidze stressed.

He also noted that Georgia welcomes the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, including the development of trade and economic ties.
