UN awaits U.S. plan to pay nearly $4B in overdue dues

The United Nations is awaiting clarification from the United States on how much of the nearly $4 billion it owes and when the payments will be made, AP reported.

Axar.az reports that the U.S. debt includes about $2.196 billion owed to the UN’s regular operating budget and roughly $1.8 billion for peacekeeping operations.

This situation comes as UN Secretary‑General António Guterres has warned that the organization faces an imminent financial collapse if countries don’t pay their dues or if financial rules are reformed.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, said a significant down payment is expected within weeks, but exact figures and timing are still unclear.

The United States, which did not pay any dues in 2025 and has reduced involvement in some UN agencies, accounts for about 95 % of the arrears to the UN’s regular budget. Venezuela is the second-largest debtor and has lost its voting rights in the General Assembly due to overdue payments. Nearly 60 countries have paid their 2026 dues on time.
