A match-worn jersey from football legend Pele’s 1958 World Cup final is set to go under the hammer, with auction house Sotheby’s estimating its value at around $6 million.
Axar.az reports, citing ESPN, the shirt, a No. 10 Brazil jersey worn during the 1958 World Cup final in Stockholm, will be available for online bidding from June 29 to July 16, Sotheby’s said on Tuesday.
The auction house described it as “the garment worn by one of the greatest footballers in history on the night his reign began.”
Pele, then 17, scored twice in Brazil’s 5–2 victory over Sweden, becoming the youngest player ever to score in a World Cup final. His first goal — controlling the ball with his chest before lifting it over a defender — is widely regarded as one of the tournament’s most memorable moments.
The jersey was reportedly gifted by Pele to teammate Dida after the match and remained in private and museum collections for decades before being acquired by its current anonymous owner in 2004.
If sold for its estimated price, it would become one of the most valuable pieces of sports memorabilia linked to the three-time World Cup winner, who died in 2022.
A public exhibition of the item is scheduled to open on July 1 at Sotheby’s Breuer building in New York ahead of the auction.
