Australia museum theft suspect faces charges

Queensland police have recovered a collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts stolen from the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology, north of Brisbane, just one day after the heist.

Axar.az, citing the Smithsonian Magazine, reports that the items included a 2,600-year-old wooden cat figurine, a 3,300-year-old necklace, a mummy mask, and an Egyptian collar.

Authorities arrested 52-year-old Miguel Simon Mungarrieta Monsalve on Russell Island; prosecutors said he believed it was his “duty to acquire the artifacts and return them to their rightful place.” Some artifacts were damaged, including several ushabtis, though the recovered items sustained only minor harm. Monsalve has been charged with breaking and entering and three counts of willful damage and is being held without bail.

Museum staff emphasized the educational value of the artifacts and condemned the reckless handling during the theft.
