Trump, Xi agree Strait of Hormuz must remain open

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed that the Strait of Hormuz “must remain open” and that Iran “can never have a nuclear weapon”.

Axar.az reports, citing CBS, according to a White House readout following their meeting in Beijing on Thursday, the two sides agreed on key issues.

“The two sides agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to support the free flow of energy,” the statement said.

It added that Xi expressed China’s opposition to the “militarization of the Strait” and any attempts to impose tolls on shipping, while signaling interest in increasing purchases of U.S. oil to reduce reliance on the route.

“Both countries agreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” the White House said.

Ahead of the meeting, Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that any Chinese support for Iran would harm bilateral relations, saying on Fox News: “We’ve made clear to them that any support for Iran would obviously be detrimental for our relationship.”

The readout did not mention Taiwan, though Chinese state media reported Xi also raised the issue during talks.
