Obama: We achieved Iran deal 'without firing a missile'

We went about trying to negotiate a diplomatic agreement that would get the enriched uranium out of Iran that would assure that they could not get to a nuclear weapon without us knowing about it.

Axar.az reports that former U.S. President Barack Obama defended his administration’s diplomatic approach to Iran in an interview with The Late Show host Stephen Colbert.

"It was internationally agreed upon and that there were mechanisms in place to enforce it and verify it, and we pulled it off without firing a missile. We got 97% of their enriched uranium out. They were able to maintain a modest civilian nuclear program for energy," Obama stated.

"There's no dispute that it worked, and we didn't have to kill a whole bunch of people or shut down the Strait of Hormuz," he added.

Obama was referring to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a multilateral deal between Iran and world powers designed to limit Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.

The JCPOA, implemented in 2016, was later abandoned by President Donald Trump in 2018, who called it “a horrible, one-sided deal” and argued it failed to permanently block Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
