A senior U.S. official has said Iran’s latest counter-proposal to end the war is insufficient and risks triggering a renewed escalation, as Washington warns that diplomacy is nearing a breaking point.
Axar.az reports, citing Axios, Iran’s updated offer contains only “token improvements” and does not include meaningful commitments on uranium enrichment or the transfer of highly enriched nuclear material.
The official said the proposal adds “more words on Iran’s commitment not to pursue a nuclear weapon,” but lacks concrete steps needed for a deal.
The official warned that if Tehran refuses to shift its position, the U.S. may be forced to respond more forcefully, stating.
“We are really not making a lot of progress. We are at a very serious place today. The pressure is on them to be responsive in the right way.”
In a more explicit warning, the official added: “If that’s not gonna happen, we will have a conversation through bombs, which will be a shame.”
The comments come as U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to meet his national security team to review military options, while indirect negotiations continue through regional mediators. The official said the talks remain fragile, with both sides still far from agreement on core nuclear issues.
