Turkish court suspends CHP leadership in major ruling

The leadership of Turkiye’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has been provisionally suspended following a court ruling.

Axar.az reports, citing Turkish media, that Ankara’s 36th Civil Chamber of the Regional Court of Appeals ruled that CHP leader Ozgur Ozel and the party’s current executive administration be removed from their positions.

According to the decision, as an interim measure in an ongoing case concerning the validity of the party’s November 4–5, 2023 congress, former CHP leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu and his previous leadership team have been ordered to temporarily assume control of the party.

The ruling effectively returns the party to its pre-congress structure until the legal process is concluded. It also annuls decisions linked to the disputed congress, including related party organizational changes.

The court further ordered that the interim measure be implemented through the relevant electoral and administrative bodies.

Following the decision, the CHP Central Executive Board convened an emergency meeting.
