Hungary and Ukraine have reached a comprehensive agreement on expanding the rights of the ethnic Hungarian minority living in Ukraine’s Transcarpathia region.
Axar.az informs that Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced on Facebook.
"I have great news. In just three weeks, we managed to achieve what Viktor Orbán’s government could not accomplish in 10 years.
We have reached a comprehensive agreement with Ukraine on expanding the linguistic, educational, cultural, and political rights of the 100,000-strong Hungarian minority.
The agreement is the result of several weeks of intensive expert-level Hungarian-Ukrainian negotiations, which also involved the political organizations and churches of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia," he said.
Magyar also stated that the Ukrainian government had pledged to incorporate the agreed measures into its legal framework in the near future, which would grant the Hungarian minority broader rights in education, culture, language use, and political representation.
According to him, Ukraine’s commitments will also be included in its action plan related to European Union accession.
"Ukraine’s commitments will also be reflected in its action plan undertaken toward the European Union. If this happens, the Hungarian government will support the opening of the first accession cluster in Ukraine’s EU membership process," Magyar noted.
At the same time, Magyar emphasized that Hungary does not support an accelerated accession process. He noted that if Ukraine manages to close all 33 EU accession chapters within the next 10 to 15 years, Hungary would hold a legally binding referendum on the issue of Ukraine’s EU membership.
