Shehbaz Sharif: US and Iran sign 'Islamabad Memorandum'

A historic “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” has been electronically signed between the United States and Iran.

Axar.az reports that Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on his X account that the memorandum was signed by the presidents of both countries and endorsed by him as mediator.

He said the agreement demonstrates a high-level commitment to a diplomatic resolution of the conflict and will enter into force immediately. Under its terms, Iran will reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States will lift its naval blockade.

Sharif congratulated US President Donald Trump and praised members of the US negotiating team, including J.D. Vance, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, for their role in reaching the agreement.

He also expressed respect for Iran’s leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian, as well as Iranian negotiators Abbas Araghchi, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and Eskandar Momeni.

The Pakistani prime minister further acknowledged the roles of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt in facilitating the process, and highlighted the contribution of Pakistan’s Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.

Sharif said the memorandum should serve as a foundation for long-term peace, mutual respect, and regional prosperity.
