Ukraine may appoint Klymenko as defense chief

Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko has emerged as the leading candidate to become the country's next defense minister, replacing Mykhailo Fedorov, according to Ukrainian lawmaker Olha Vasylevska-Smahliuk.

Axar.az reports that "Ihor Klymenko is the main candidate for the post of defense minister instead of Mykhailo Fedorov. Ivan Vyhivskyi, the current head of the National Police, is being considered as Klymenko's successor as interior minister," she wrote on Telegram.

According to the lawmaker, Fedorov could be appointed a deputy prime minister.

On July 12, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced plans to reshuffle the entire government and dismiss Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. He said the changes were aimed at preparing the country for the coming winter and implementing agreements with Kyiv's allies on reconstruction.

Svyrydenko has confirmed that she is leaving the post of prime minister. She has served in the role since July 17, 2025.
