Diadems reveal Bronze Age trade across Mediterranean - Photo

3,400-year-old golden diadems and gold mouthpieces found in Bronze Age tombs on Cyprus offer a rare look at life in one of the ancient world’s busiest trading centers.

Axar.az reports, citing Archaeology News, a new study found the ornaments were likely made by local goldsmiths who blended styles from Egypt, the Aegean, and the Near East into designs unique to Cyprus.

The artifacts came from eight tombs at Hala Sultan Tekke, a major port city during the Late Bronze Age. Archaeologists uncovered nine gold diadems, worn across the forehead, and two gold mouthpieces placed over the lips of the dead. The study appears in the Oxford Journal of Archaeology.

The team believes the ornaments were made in Cyprus, possibly at Hala Sultan Tekke itself. The gold likely arrived through trade, with possible sources including Nubia in Egypt or the Ada Tepe gold mine in present-day Bulgaria.

The study also looked at how people used these objects. Heavier diadems, weighing between 11.7 and 23.14 grams, show signs of wear. People likely wore them during life before they were buried with them. Smaller pieces, weighing between 1.02 and 2.66 grams, show no clear signs of use. Those appear to have been made for burial.

The mouthpieces tell a different story. They are plain gold sheets with small holes at each end for tying them in place. Researchers think they served only during funeral rites and marked the dead person’s passage into the afterlife.

The ornaments came from burials of adult men and women. One diadem belonged to a child about four or five years old. Another decorated with bull heads was buried with a woman between 35 and 40 years old. Since bulls often symbolized male power, the find suggests the image held a wider meaning in Cypriot society.
