Hungary's President signs law ending his term in office

Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok has signed a constitutional amendment ​passed by Prime Minister Peter Magyar's ruling Tisza party that ends his term as head of state.

Axar.az reports that Sulyok announced the decision himself on national television.

The legislation was part of Magyar's drive to dismantle former Prime Minister Viktor Orban's bastions of power, for which Magyar says he received a strong mandate from voters after ousting the right-wing leader in an April election landslide.

"The 17th amendment is a violation of the current Fundamental Law. However, guided by my conscience, I signed it. My signature is the final proof of my complete and unwavering respect for the institution of the presidency, as well as my commitment to strict adherence to Hungary's Fundamental Law," Sulyok said.
