Turkiye condemns Greece over school closures

Turkiye's Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned Greece's decision to close eight more primary schools belonging to the Turkish minority in Western Thrace, citing low student enrollment.

Axar.az reports that Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Oncu Keceli said the latest decision reduces the number of primary schools serving the Turkish minority in the region to 76.

Keceli also said creating new obstacles to first-grade enrollment at the 1st Turkish Minority Primary School of Xanthi is another example of the systematic practices aimed at undermining the educational rights of the Turkish Minority in Western Thrace.

"These coercive decisions and practices constitute a violation of the provisions of the Treaty of Lausanne.

We once again call on Greece, which continues to refrain from implementing international court rulings identifying violations of the rights of the Turkish Minority in Western Thrace, as well as the recommendations of leading European institutions, to act in accordance with its treaty obligations regarding minority rights and fundamental human rights.

Turkiye will continue to firmly support the Western Thrace Turkish Minority in its struggle to protect its rights and legitimate interests," he noted.
