EU fines Google €890m over DMA breaches

The European Commission has fined Google a total of €890 million (about $1 billion) for violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Axar.az informs, citing the European Commission, that Google was fined €460 million for giving preferential treatment to its own services, including shopping, hotels, transport and sports, in Google Search results.

The Commission also imposed a €430 million fine over Google's Play Store practices, finding that the company restricted app developers from directing users to alternative, often cheaper, purchasing options outside the platform.

The Commission ordered Google to bring its practices into compliance within 60 days by treating competing services fairly in search results and allowing app developers to freely promote and conclude sales outside Google Play.

If Google fails to comply, it could face periodic penalty payments of up to 5% of its total worldwide annual turnover.
