Iran says Strait of Hormuz will remain closed

The Strait of Hormuz will remain closed if Oman does not accept Iran's proposal.

Axar.az reports, citing Iranian media, that Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi made the remarks, adding that Iran has proposed holding talks with Oman on a temporary shipping route in the Strait of Hormuz.

If an agreement is reached, the route would replace the current northern and southern navigation lanes.

According to Gharibabadi, Oman proposed shared control over the strait, but Iran rejected the offer.

"We said that the entry route should remain fully under Iran's control, while part of the exit route should also remain under Iran's control. If they accept this, we will move to the next stage. We do not officially recognize the southern route of the strait," he said.

The deputy foreign minister stressed that Iran would not accept any other arrangement.
