Kallas urges Iran to stop backing Russia

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said she held a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss the situation in the Gulf and Russia's war against Ukraine.

Axar.az reports that Kallas shared the remarks in a post on X.

She said the pause in fighting in the Gulf could provide mediators with time to seek a diplomatic solution and prevent a return to full-scale war.

Kallas also condemned what she described as aggression against French diplomats in Tehran, saying it was unacceptable and had been denounced by all EU member states.

Kallas welcomed a recent conversation between Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Araghchi aimed at reducing tensions.

"It is encouraging that Andrii Sybiha spoke to Araghchi to reduce tensions. I stand ready to support these efforts," she added.

Kallas also reiterated her call on Iran to stop providing military support to Russia.

"I reiterated my call on Iran to end its military support for Russia. Moscow is inflicting ever higher numbers of civilian casualties in Ukraine, and any supplies it receives are helping it kill more civilians. Ukraine has the right to defend itself," she said.
