Earthquake leaves Kumamoto temples in ruins

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck near Kumamoto on Japan's Kyushu island on Tuesday afternoon.

Axar.az reports, citing the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, that the earthquake occurred at 4:27 p.m. local time on July 28, with its epicenter about 16 kilometers south-southeast of Kumamoto at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Japan, located along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences frequent earthquakes and maintains some of the world's strictest earthquake-resistant building standards.
