The chairman of the Bundestag’s Parliamentary Oversight Committee, Marc Henrichmann (CDU), wants to enable German intelligence services to carry out preventive cyberattacks against Russian drone manufacturers.

Axar.az reports, citing German media, that Henrichmann said the proposal was part of an intelligence reform he is currently helping to develop.

“Simply collecting intelligence” would no longer be enough in the future, Henrichmann stressed. The best drone, he said, is one that never takes off and therefore does not threaten human lives in Germany.

Speaking to news broadcaster WELT TV, Henrichmann said: “We really need to enable our services, ideally, to disable and take out either the attack drone in Russia or the factory that produces it before it can be used against a German airport or threaten the safety and lives of people in Germany.”

The intelligence services need to be “restructured and organized differently, ideally staying ahead of the wave,” Henrichmann said. “The best drone is one that never takes off and can threaten Germany.”

Preventive action would require the intelligence services to have the necessary “operational capabilities,” he said: “‘Keep them busy’ is a phrase from cyber defense — in other words, keeping the attackers occupied, perhaps also by using capabilities Germany has to make the attackers concerned that countermeasures could be taken.”

Germany must now quickly “come together and ask: How do we pool our capabilities?” Henrichmann said. “Because I think this is also evidence, at the moment, that we are being shown up.”
