Mothers are symbol of compassion, mercy and self-sacrifice, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a message marking Mother’s Day.

In the message, Erdogan hailed mothers’ role in establishing peace in the society.

"Our mothers, who teach us love, respect, solidarity, sharing and tolerance, are our greatest strength in establishing happiness and peace in our country," he added.

Citing the proverb, “Paradise lies at the feet of the mothers,” Erdogan said mothers are their children’s strength, first teacher and safe haven.

Turkey celebrates Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May.
