A Ukrainian diplomat working in an EU country has been arrested while trying to smuggle nearly $ 1 million worth of currency, gold bars and jewelry.

Axar.az reports that the statement came from the State Investigation Bureau of Ukraine.

At the Yagodin checkpoint, SBS investigators found a bag containing about 68,000 euros, 140,000 US dollars, more than 12 kilograms of gold bars and a total of 1.8 kilograms of gold jewelry. Allegedly, the embassy employee tried to clear the luggage under the guise of a "diplomatic bag". The property was confiscated in favor of the state, and the diplomat was fined 26 million hryvnia.
