Commemoration of the 71st anniversary of the Nagasaki bombings gathered thousands of people.
The bomb was dropped by an American bomber on August 9, 1945. 3 days after the Hiroshima bombing.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, together with approximately 5 600 people took part in a ceremony that started at 10:35 pm, Japanese time.
At 11:02 pm, which is the exact time when 71 years ago the bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, people commemorated those who passed away with a minute of silence.
The number of people who had gone through the bombing continues to reduce. Toyokazu Ihara was 9-years old that day, 71 years ago. He recalled the bomb's horrific aftermath and vowed to carry on with his campaign for peace.
In the peaceful declaration of this year, Mayor of Nagasaki, Tomihasa Taue called world leaders to visit Nagasaki, referring to the historic visit of US President Barak Obama to Hiroshima. He also called the leaders of nuclear states to participate in discussions about creating legal frames to eliminate nuclear weapons.
Prime Minister Abe stated that Japan will continue to underline importance of saving and strengthening the frames of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. PM said that he calls all the nuclear and non-nuclear states for cooperation to create a world without nuclear weapons. He also called for the world leaders and youth to know what kind of a tragedy can be led by nuclear bombing.
