The confessions of Hovhannes (Ovannes) Chekicyan, Armenia's National Hero and the artistic director and chief conductor of the Armenian State National Academic Choir, have attracted attention in the Armenian media.
Axar.az, reports that he reaffirmed his previous statements that, during his visits to Yerevan, he could only hear "Baku music" (Azerbaijani music) coming from the windows.
In response to a journalist's question on this matter, Chekicyan said, "Yes, this is an undeniable fact. It is better now. Gradually, people are understanding that this is not their music. But unfortunately, this music has been replaced by triviality, which does not make us happy."
Chekicyan refused to discuss the Second Karabakh War and anti-terror operations. Additionally, when asked by a journalist whether it is possible to live in peace and harmony with Baku, he replied, "Don't involve me in politics."
It should be noted that Hovhannes (Ovannes) Chekicyan was born in Istanbul in 1929. He received his musical education at the Istanbul Conservatory and at the "Ecole Normale de Musique" in Paris. He served as an orchestra conductor at the Istanbul State Opera for a time. He moved to Armenia in 1961 and continued his musical career at the State Music Academy. Since 1975, he has been teaching at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory. In 2017, the President of Armenia awarded him the title of "National Hero."
