Brutal attacks on women spark protests in Turkiye

A series of brutal attacks on women has sparked outrage and protests in Turkiye. In response to public pressure, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has promised to tighten criminal laws.

Axar.az informs that this was reported by Politico.

Violence against women remains a serious problem in Turkiye. This year, nearly 300 women have been murdered. Protesters criticize the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), claiming that the protection of women is not a government priority. Recently, three particularly shocking murders have resonated in society. Marches have been held in various cities demanding an end to impunity for criminals and a stop to violence. The most shocking incident involved the decapitation of 19-year-old Igbal Uzun, whose killer later committed suicide. On the same day, another woman, Ayshenur Khalil, was murdered after her throat was slashed by the perpetrator. Just a few days earlier, a 26-year-old policewoman was also killed in September. Erdogan, speaking to the AKP parliamentary group, stated that the murders of women, including the death of the policewoman, provoke a just reaction in society. He vowed to tighten penalties and halt the early release of convicts," the report stated.

It is noteworthy that Turkiye withdrew from the Istanbul Convention, which aimed to combat violence against women, in 2021. Erdogan had stated at that time that the Convention threatened traditional family values, as it also protects LGBTQ+ rights.
