What happened in Georgia after the parliamentary elections held on October 26 is of great concern.

Axar.az reports that these words were reflected in the statement of EU's chief diplomat Joseph Borrell.

"International observers recorded law violations both during the election campaign and on the election day. They did not accept that the election was free and fair.

I am asking for a transparent investigation. The Central Election Commission of Georgia and relevant bodies should investigate violations, pressures and intimidation of voters. These violations must be eliminated promptly, transparently and independently. Georgia is a candidate country for the EU, and for this reason, it must demonstrate its commitment to European values, starting with full transparency in the election process. Fair elections and respect for the rule of law are cornerstones of democracy and an integral part and basis of the path to EU membership.

I have asked the Political and Security Committee to meet today to urgently discuss the difficult situation in Georgia. I have also put it on the agenda for the November meeting of the Council on Foreign Relations.

The people of Georgia have been demonstrating their commitment to democratic values and their country's progress towards the EU for months. They deserve clarity in the electoral process so that they have confidence in the legitimacy of the next government. It is important that the protests and the government's response to them continue peacefully. There is a need to eliminate the democratic backwardness in the country, to provide a favorable environment for the media, civil society and the opposition, which make up a pluralistic, democratic society," the statement said.

It should be noted that in the parliamentary elections held in Georgia on October 26, the ruling Georgian Dream Party won with 53.93 percent of votes. Four opposition coalitions that managed to enter the parliament and President Zurabishvili declared that the elections were rigged and refused to recognize the results.
