Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's leftist coalition NPP secured a resounding victory in snap legislative elections, according to results released on Friday.

Axar.az reports that voters rejected the establishment parties, who were blamed for causing the country's ongoing economic crisis.

Dissanayake, a self-proclaimed Marxist, had won the September presidential election on a platform focused on fighting corruption and recovering stolen assets. His win came two years after a prolonged financial collapse that led to widespread hardships across Sri Lanka.

“We believe that this is a crucial election that will mark a turning point in Sri Lanka,” Dissanayake stated.
