Lebanon’s army, responsible for ensuring the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah holds, announced on Wednesday that it is preparing to deploy to the southern part of the country.

Axar.az reports that, citing Reuters, the military also requested that residents of border villages delay returning home until the Israeli military, which has fought Hezbollah several times and advanced about six kilometers into Lebanese territory, withdraws.

A ceasefire between Israel and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah came into effect on Wednesday after both sides agreed to an agreement brokered by the U.S. and France, marking a rare diplomatic success in a region affected by two wars over the past year.

The agreement, which aims to end the conflict along the Israeli-Lebanese border that has claimed thousands of lives, represents a significant achievement for U.S.-led diplomacy in the final days of President Joe Biden’s administration.
