The Georgia Senate has advanced two bills that would ban most gender-affirming care for minors and incarcerated individuals, following similar moves by Republicans in other states.
Axar.az, citing ABC news, reports that the chamber voted 34-19 to prohibit puberty blockers and other treatments for people under 18, even for those already undergoing care.
A second bill, passed 37-15, restricts gender-affirming care for individuals in state prisons.
Opponents argue the bills infringe on transgender rights and divert attention from more urgent issues like housing and healthcare. Senate Minority Whip Kim Jackson condemned the legislation as an attack on transgender people. Some Democrats, including Sens. Elena Parent and Sonya Halpern, broke party lines to support the prison-related bill, citing concerns over taxpayer funding. The bills now move to the House for further debate.
