A recent analysis by Honest Rеporting has revealed that Hamas quietly revised its reported casualty figures from the Israel-Hamas war, reducing its previously claimed civilian death toll.
Axar.az, citing JP, reports that the updated March 2025 report shows that approximately 72% of fatalities are men aged 13-55, a demographic that aligns closely with Hamas combatants.
This contradicts Hamas’s earlier claims that 70% of casualties were women and children. Notably, the new list has removed 3,400 previously "identified" deaths from Hamas’s August and October 2024 reports, including 1,080 children, suggesting these deaths were either falsely reported or unverified. This pattern of inflated casualty numbers was previously documented in a December 2024 report by the Henry Jackson Society, which found widespread inconsistencies in Hamas’s figures, partly attributed to computer system failures in November 2023.
Fox notes that Hamas appears to be retroactively revising its data to make it more convincing while removing unverifiable names from its records.
The process of comparison has been challenging due to Hamas's use of PDF lists instead of easily analyzable formats like Excel, but researchers have transferred the data for a thorough review. These findings raise serious concerns about the credibility of Hamas's casualty reports and highlight the broader issue of misinformation in conflict zones.
