On May 4, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to rebuild and reopen Alcatraz prison to detain the nation’s most dangerous criminals.

Axar.az, citing Reuters, reports that he called it a symbol of law and order and directed federal agencies, including the Bureau of Prisons and Homeland Security, to carry out the project.

Originally closed in 1963 due to high operating costs, Alcatraz is now a major tourist site.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dismissed the plan as unserious, noting its current status as a national park.
