In a statement from Essex Police, it was confirmed that all of the deceased were foreign nationals.
The incident occurred just before 4:00 p.m. local time on Sunday. The aircraft involved was a 12-meter-long Beech B200 Super King Air, which crashed shortly after takeoff in an explosion. Witnesses described the plane as bursting into flames like a fireball right after becoming airborne.
Two pilots and two passengers aboard the aircraft were killed. The victims’ names have not been released. Authorities are continuing investigations to confirm their identities.
The Civil Aviation Authority has established a large airspace restriction zone around the crash site. Following the incident, Southend Airport was closed and all flights scheduled for July 14 were redirected to other airports.
