Against the backdrop of the expected visit of US Vice President James David Vance to the South Caucasus, new risks and concerns are being discussed in the region.
Axar.az reports that former Armenian Ambassador at Large Edmon Marukyan spoke about this in a video statement.
Marukyan said that Vance's visit is not limited to bilateral relations. According to him, in the event of a possible US-Iranian conflict, Washington is trying to clarify the positions of Armenia and Azerbaijan in advance.
According to the diplomat, Armenia should raise more vital issues during this visit. He recalled that Baku could not purchase weapons from the US for many years, but now these restrictions have actually been lifted. Marukyan believes that Armenia should demand clear security guarantees from the US so that the weapons acquired by Azerbaijan are not used against Armenia in the future.
Marukyan also drew attention to a more dangerous scenario. According to him, Baku's decision to sentence the leaders of the defunct so-called regime to life imprisonment after the presentation of the "Zayed Human Brotherhood Award" in Abu Dhabi could be the beginning of a new phase.
The former ambassador claims that as a next step, Azerbaijan could make territorial demands on Armenia under the guise of "compensation," and it is this risk that is currently the most serious concern in Yerevan.
