Chinese President Xi Jinping gave U.S. President Donald Trump a rare tour of the Zhongnanhai compound in Beijing on Friday, showing him centuries-old trees in the restricted seat of China’s central leadership after high-level talks on trade, Taiwan, and Iran.
Axar.az reports, citing Reuters, the former imperial garden, which now houses the offices of China’s Communist Party leadership and the State Council, is typically closed to foreign visitors.
During the walk, a hot mic captured Xi describing the age of the trees as the leaders strolled through the grounds.
“All the trees on this side are over 200 to 300 years old,” Xi said through an interpreter. “Over there, there are some more than 400 years old.”
Trump responded in surprise: “They live that long?”
Xi added that “there are also 1,000-year-old trees in other places,” while pointing deeper into the compound.
At one point, Trump asked whether other foreign leaders had been brought there.
“Very rarely,” Xi replied. “For example, Putin has been here.”
Xi later invited Trump to touch a 280-year-old tree, to which the U.S. president responded: “Good. I like it.”
The exchange offered a rare glimpse of informal interaction between the two leaders following a tightly watched summit that covered major geopolitical issues.
