Mr Trump said on Tuesday that he wanted to share with Russia “facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety” for humanitarian reasons. And he noted that he wants “Russia to greatly step up their fight against Isis and terrorism”.

The president faced bipartisan criticism on Monday after reports that he had endangered national security and breached the trust of an ally by sharing highly classified information outlining details of an Isis plot in an Oval Office meeting with Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, and Sergei Kislyak, Moscow’s ambassador last week.
