Turkish president to attend refugee forum in Geneva

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to attend an international refugee forum slated for Dec. 16-17 in Geneva, the directorate of communications said on Sunday.

Axar.az reports citing Anadolu Agency.

The Global Refugee Forum by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) serves as the main platform where state officials monitor the UN’s Global Compact on Refugees initiative established in 2018.

Erdogan, who has been invited by UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, will co-chair the event along with other state officials from Costa Rica, Pakistan, Ethiopia and Germany.

International organizations, private sector, NGOs and refugees will to take part in the event where stakeholder countries will make statements and inform others about the situation they are dealing with.

Since the eruption of a bloody civil war in Syria in 2011, Turkey has welcomed displaced Syrians. There are over 3.6 Syrians taking shelter in Turkey, making the country the world’s top refugee-hosting nation.
