Iran's stance on Zangezur corridor remains unchanged

It is clear that Iran's stance on the Zangezur corridor issue remains principled. Although Iran appears to resist Armenia’s efforts to bring the U.S. and France into the region, and occasionally warns both Pashinyan and the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs that regional issues should supposedly be resolved locally, Tehran does not retreat on this matter.

Axar.az reports that political analyst Turab Rzayev expressed these views when commenting on Iranian officials' statements regarding the Zangezur corridor.

Touching on Iran's attempts to normalize relations with Azerbaijan, the political analyst emphasized that Iran does not deviate from state policy on the Zangezur corridor issue:

"It appears that Iran has a consistent state policy on this issue and has no intention of changing it. Iran has different interests in this matter. Specifically, it does not want the Armenia-Iran border to be under Russian control. The opening of the Zangezur corridor and its transfer to the control of the Russian FSB would effectively place the corridor under Russia’s control, which Iran perceives as a threat. On the other hand, Iran, by acting as Armenia's protector, tries to use Christian solidarity, particularly in Catholic Europe, alongside the Vatican. At the same time, they aim to garner political sympathy from pro-Armenian groups in the U.S., including liberal left-wing democratic parties that portray Armenians as a persecuted people and seek to defend their rights."

The political analyst also noted that Iran occasionally exploits the West's hostile attitude towards Turks:

"The reformist wing of the Tehran regime openly tells the U.S. that if it weren't for them, the Turkish language would dominate the region. They are thus attempting to use the anti-Turkish sentiment in the West to some extent for this purpose. As a result, they create the image of a protector of Armenia in the West and Europe."

He stated that Iran and Russia’s interests do not align on this issue:

"Iran wants to ensure that Russian control is not re-established over the Zangezur corridor. More such statements are expected. There are agreements between Iran and Armenia that could lead to a strategic alliance. In fact, we could even consider Iran and Armenia as military allies on certain issues. Therefore, relations with Armenia will remain a priority in Iran's foreign policy, and this will continue to cause permanent problems in Tehran’s relations with Baku."
