The UN is fully aware of the tensions between Azerbaijan and Russia.
Axar.az reports that this was told by the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric.
In response to a question about why the UN has not yet issued any official condemnation or demanded a statement from Russia regarding the incident, the spokesperson said that he was aware of the events:
“We are fully aware of the tensions that have arisen between Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation due to several incidents, including the incident you referred to. We are closely following the incidents that have occurred in both countries. We hope that all of these issues will be resolved through diplomatic channels.”
He did not provide additional information on the details of the incident and whether the UN has officially appealed to Russia on this issue.
It should be noted that on June 27, two Azerbaijani civilians, Ziyeddin and Huseyn Safarov, were reportedly tortured to death by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg. They were the brothers of the well-known Azerbaijani journalist Seyfaddin Huseynli. Several people were seriously injured that day, and nine were arrested.
